The sculptor of the statue is Yervand Kochar. The statue was erected in 1959. It is in the square just outside the railway station. During the Soviet times, most of the tourists visited Armenia by train, and the first thing that the tourists were attracted by was the statue to Davit of Sassoun. It is magnificent: a giant horseman with huge muscles, a severe look holding a huge sword in the way one holds a big broom or a scythe. The horseman doesn’t seem to be going to kill one man. He seems to be going to sweep away a huge amount of rubbish with a huge broom or mow ripe hay with a huge scythe. The horseman is Davit of Sassoun, the Armenian epic hero who according to the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sassoun, drove Arab invaders out of Armenia. There is a bowl on the rock with water flowing out of it. Yervand Kochar’s idea was to show that Armenians are very patient to an extent but when the bowl of patience is full, Armenians can rebel. And the scythe-like sword is also symbolic denoting that Armenians are not killers, they only sweep away the intruders. This is a genius piece of work.
Արձանի քանդակագործը Երվանդ Քոչարն է: Արձանը տեղադրվել է 1959-ին: Այն կայարանամերձ հրապարակում է: Խորհրդային միության տարիներին զբոսաշրջիկների մեծ մասը Հայաստան էր այցելում գնացքով և առաջին բանը, որը գրավում էր նրանց ուշադրությունը, Սասունցի Դավթի արձանն էր: Հոյակապ է այն՝ մի հսկա ձիավոր հսկա մկաններով, խոժոռ հայացքով՝ մի հսկա թուր բռնած այնպես, ինչպես մարդիկ մեծ ցախավելը կամ գերանդին են բռնում: Չի թվում, որ ձիավորը պատրաստվում է մի մարդ սպանել: Թվում է, որ նա պատրաստվում է սրբել մաքրել մեծ քանակի աղբ մի հսկայական ցախավելով, կամ էլ՝ հնձելու է հասունացած խոտը մի հսկայական գերանդիով: Ձիավորը Սասունցի Դավիթն է, որն ըստ հայկական «Սասնա ծռեր» էպոսի արաբ նվաճողներին դուրս քշեց Հայաստանից: Ժայռի վրա մի թաս կա, որից ջուր է հոսում: Երվանդ Քոչարը այդ գաղափարով ցույց է տվել, որ հայերը շատ համբերատար են մինչև մի պահի, բայց երբ համբերության թասը լցվում է, հայերը կարող են ապստամբել: Եվ գերանդու նման սուրը բռնելը նույնպես խորհրդանշական է, որը նշանակում է, որ հայերը մարդասպաններ չեն, այլ միայն սրբում դուրս են քշում ներխուժողներին: Սա արվեստի հանճարեղ գործ է:
